By the Numbers
Special Olympics Pennsylvania – Delaware County (SOPA Delco) provides a year-round training and competitive sports program for Delaware County children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or closely related developmental disabilities. The program provides training and competitions in over 15 sports and leadership programs across ~20 facilities throughout the county.
Eligible athletes are all children and adults, at least eight years old, with intellectual disabilities, a cognitive delay, or a closely related developmental disability. Eligible athletes have functional limitations in both general learning and in adaptive skills. Children under the age of 8 years old may participate in Young Athletes Programs (YAP) designed specifically to meet the needs of pre-school age and early elementary age children with intellectual disabilities and focuses on an introduction to sports rather than on training and competition in specific sports.
Our program is managed entirely by volunteers. All funding is raised through special events (i.e. golf outing) and charitable donations.
